Dr. King

JMC 455

Our last assignment was to discuss Martin Luther King, Jr and find articles to see how he or people involved with events were portrayed in media. What I found most of, was the idea that Dr. King's message should be revived after the Tuscon shooting. Many newspapers, including the Boston Globe, had articles saying Dr. King would be pushing for peace to this day. The tone was somber. I believe Dr. King is now revered among most Americans for his peaceful message and also for his belief that everyone was created equal.

First Assignments

I will be using this blog for both of my classes I have Professor Morris for. These classes include Reporting Public Affairs and Women and Minorities in Mass Media. I hope you enjoy my personal opinions.

JMC 455 Assignment

When asked to define "Diversity", I came up with this definition:

Diversity is allowing and encouraging participation from all groups of races, ethnicities, sexes, religions and sexual orientations.

What elements should journalists consider when writing?

I selected all the options. Choosing the right words is necessary. If one is not careful, readers may be confused as to what the writer is saying and assume the worst interpretation. It is important to avoid stereotypes as well. If a detail about a person does not pertain to the story, it doesn't belong necessarily belong in the story. Omission is also an element to take into account. Be careful not to exclude other races or groups just beacuse they are not the majority.

JMC 414 Assignment

I enjoyed this first assignment. I am an avid Maureen Dowd fan, so finding some of her articles to read was easy. I look at my NYTimes app on my iPhone daily just to make sure I won't miss an article from her. Maureen Dowd has an interesting style of writing. Her columns always include her sarcastic humor. I enjoy her writing also because she doesn't just pick on one certain political group. She writes at a level that is easy to understand, but not dumbed down. It is also nice to read her columns because as a reader, I always learn something. She includes anecdotes about her personal life sometimes, and I love to read those too. It's always fun to see where a person comes from. It gives an insight into why why he or she currently think the way he or she does.

NOTE: To continue with the rest of the assignment, I will have to go to campus to access the other blog web sites. I'm on a mutant computer my father made and it isn't loading the sites. I will continue this post on campus.
